The beauty of this this film can not be put in to words. It's witty, it's fun, it's brilliant, it's deep, it's sad, it's poetic, it's surreal and of course it's based on a Brodway musical. I couldn't recommend it more, it will truly blow you away.

The film follows our main character, Hedwig. A transsexual rocker which is determined to find her other half, but does not know if it's a man or a woman. Along the way she comes across Luther, an American soldier, and to escape to the other side of the Berlin wall goes under the knife so she can marry her beloved. Things do not go as planned however, and Hedwig is left with, as she puts it, an angry inch.

Between babysitting jobs and selling herself Hedwig meets with the love of her life, Tommy Gnosis.

The acting in the movie is truly exquisite in every way. The title role is played by the film's director and writer, John Cameron Mitchell, and may I say you will fall in love with the guy after watching this movie, no matter if you're a guy or a girl, straight, gay or bi. He's just that awesome. Not to mention how his tremendous singing voice shines throughout the film. Another really noticeable performance is John Pitt as Tommy Gnosis. He's of course yummy as hell, and you really see his character development at the end of the film.

Another thing which makes the movie what it is is it's amazing rock music. Personal favorite tracks would be the upbeat "Wig In A Box" and the profound "Wicked Little Town."

And now for the gay action, no? Well Hedwig is, as mentioned, a transsexual. She wears women's clothing and a wig throughout most of the film, and may I say that she wears that very, very well. The second most beautiful scene in the movie is a flashback to Hedwig's and Tommy's relationship in it's bloom, where they naturally make out. And the most beautiful scene in the movie would be their encounters at the end of the film, where you see Hedwig as her true self, without all the make-up and without the wig. In that scene one almost forgets to enjoy watching the two topless rockers smirched with eye-makeup standing face to face so beautifully, simply because of the incredible power of the scene. It's probably only about three minutes long, but hits you in the face with a conclusion of the entire story.

This movie is of course interesting as hell to watch as a yaoi fan, but I'd recommend it for anyone. It really is a complex story of love and betrayal.
