Introduction to Boys' Love
New to all this? Well, welcome to the wide world of Boys' Love anime and manga! Boys' Love, also called "BL" or "yaoi," is a sub-genre of shoujo (girls') manga which focus on romantic or sexual relationships between males. The stories are almost exclusively written by women for a female audience to enjoy. There are many different kinds of stories, from high school to historical to fantasy, from sweet and tender romances to hardcore pornographic sex stories. There's something for everyone -- as long as you like two good-looking guys interested in each other!

Yaoi Anime and Manga
Most yaoi anime and manga is created by Japanese artists and writers, and therefore it's
created in Japanese. Luckily for English-speaking yaoi fans, many manga and anime titles
are licensed, meaning that a professional company translates it and releases it on
DVD or in paperback form in the U.S. However, if a title is unlicensed, groups of
fans will sometimes band together to release fan translations of their favorite anime or
manga. A fan-translated anime is called a fansub, and a fan-translated manga is
called a scanslation. Both are distributed electronically, over the internet --
fansubs in digital video formats, scanslations as images. Boys on Boys on Film does not
deal with scanslations, but we do review fansubbed anime. This is mostly due to the huge
numbers of manga versus the relatively small amount of anime.
Confused about licensing and fansubbing? See our license & fansub guide.

Ai no Kusabi
In a future, male-dominated society, Blondies are in control and dark-haired Mongrels are
seen as sub-human. When the top Blondie, Iason, falls in love with a Mongrel gang member,
Riki, he risks not only his position but his life and Riki's. The chains of love will be
the undoing of both of them.
Ai no Kusabi is the classic yaoi title, the ultimate in dark angst and explicit
sex, the best of everything. There are two 60-minute OAV episodes. Fansubs by the Lupin
Gang (see below) offer extra information that's needed before viewing.

Earthian
Chihaya and Kagetsuya are angels sent to Earth to judge whether Earthians are fit to
continue existing. Their relationship grows as they face the threat of a crazed scientist
and his black-winged creation, Messiah.
Though only one truly yaoi scene exists in the four hour-long episodes, this title is
highly recommended due to its beauty and deep storyline. It is available on DVD from Media
Blasters.

Fake
Dee and Ryo are New York City cops, partners in more than just work. Dee hopes that a
vacation for the couple to a secluded resort will finally be his chance to make love to
his beloved Ryo. But trouble follows the pair wherever they go, and they end up
investigating a murder mystery.
The 60-minute OAV only explores one small chapter of the long-running Fake manga. Great
animation and voice acting, along with humor and a good story.

Gravitation
All perky Shuuichi Shindou wants is to be a famous rock star! Even though reserved,
withdrawn author Eiri Yuki says he has no talent, the two opposites are drawn together by
a force stronger than either of them. It's... gravitation.
Based on another popular manga, Gravitation is one of the only truly shounen-ai TV
series. The series is only 13 episodes and has been released on DVD by RightStuf
International.

Haru wo Daiteita
Iwaki and Katou are adult film stars trying to create legitimate careers. The film and
subsequent television program "Haru wo Daiteita" could be their big break, but only if
they can deal with their feelings for each other first.
The struggles of Iwaki's feelings as Katou tries to prove his affection may be more
interesting than the brief sex scenes, but the two 45-minute OAV episodes are quite
faithful to the original manga. Be Beautiful has lost the license to the anime, but is still in negotiations.

Kaze to Ki no Uta
Serge is a warm and open new student at a French boarding school, asked to share a room
with the school's most troublesome -- and most promiscuous -- student, Gilbert. Serge
seeks to understand and redeem his troubled roommate, and both boys are forever touched by
one another. Also known as "Song of Wind and Trees."
Simply the sweetest, most compelling story of boy's love. One hour-long OAV is not
enough to explore this tender young relationship. The OAV is available only in fansub.

Kizuna
Enjoji and Ranmaru are a happy couple, despite Enjoji's Yakuza family past and Ranmaru's
being forced to quit his beloved kendo due to an injury. However, Enjoji's younger
half-brother Kei is also in love with Ranmaru, and tries to steal him away by coming to
live with the couple!
Hot and sexy scenes blend with warm and tender scenes, and a story that involves more
comedy than conflict. The happiest yaoi couple ever is available on two DVDs from Be Beautiful.

Legend of the Blue Wolves
As humanity fights against the destructive alien race Apocalypse, young soldier Jonathan
becomes the target of his fat, sadistic commanding officer's lust. When Jonathan won't
submit to the officer's desires, his friend and roommate Leonard has to come to his
rescue. Known alternately as "Legend of the Blue Wolves" and "Legend of the Four
Horsemen."
Warning: not for the faint of heart! The 45-minute OAV contains graphic rape and
dismemberment, but the final scenes between Jonathan and Leonard are among the most
beautiful yaoi scenes ever. Media Blasters has released it on DVD.

Kazuomi falls for youthful virgin fashion model Mizuki and promises to show him a pleasure

Mizuki the joys of sex and love.
Plot? What plot? Sexy, unrealistic yaoi fun, with a classic weepy uke and nothing but
love in the end. The DVD is available from Media Blasters.

Mirage of Blaze
Ougi Takaya never dreamed that his body housed the 400-year-old soul of a military general
from the Warring States era. Nor did he dream that his other self, Uesugi Kagetora, would
be loved by a man like Naoe Nobutsuna. Their story of love and hate spans generations,
lifetimes, hundreds of years, but the two can never come together nor remain apart.
Amazingly animated and amazingly intricate, Mirage of Blaze is a 13-episode series with
lots of plot development and a whole lot of sexual and relationship tension. Naoe and
Takaya are a tragic couple that, most likely, can never be, but their story is
captivating. The series is available on DVD from Media Blasters.

fun, entertaining series now available on DVD from Media Blasters.

Zetsuai 1989 / Bronze / Cathexis

player Izumi. The couple has to get past Koji's fame and Izumi's dark past before they can
admit their feelings for each other. Even Koji's family tries to intervene, but nothing
can destroy the desperate love that the couple has for one another.
One of the best, most heartwrenching yaoi love stories, not to mention the great music
and sexy character designs. Zetsuai 1989 and Bronze are separate hour-long OAVs about Koji
and Izumi, while Cathexis is a set of five music videos to Koji's songs, examining
different facets of their relationship. All are available only in fansub.

Brother

Sexy salaryman Asuka has a problem "getting it up," and it's all his step-brother Yui's fault! When they're stuck in an abandoned building together, though, this brother relationship heats up fast. Incredibly sexy art and a genuinely strong relationship story work together in this one-shot manga by Ougi Yuzuha. It doesn't get much hotter than this, the debut release from Drama Queen.

Earthian

Chihaya and Kagetsuya's full story is told in the original manga by Kouga Yun, beautifully published by BLU Manga. Angels are really alien beings who walk among humans, noting their pluses and minuses, but the angel society is far from perfect itself. Chihaya and Kagetsuya are slowly drawn in to a forbidden love, and their relationship blossoms with aching, beautiful slowness. Three volumes follow this main story, with a final volume that tells the story of supporting characters, the archangels Raphael and Michael.

Embracing Love

Iwaki Kyousukie, star of pornographic films, has a chance to break into legitimate acting with a film called "Embracing Love," based on a gay novel. However, his audition is a sex scene with hot young model Katou Yohji -- and Iwaki ends up on the bottom. The tumultuous, uncertain, but ultimately passionate nature of the two actors fuels over ten volumes of manga and is still going strong in Japan. Originally by Nitta Youka, the English version is being released by Be Beautiful.

FAKE

Ryo MacLane and Dee Laytner are New York police detectives in this seven-volume series by Matoh Sanami. The first six volumes are mostly action stories based on the crimes the duo investigate, but Dee makes no bones about his attraction to Ryo, and that's the fodder for a lot of comedy and great sexual tension. Things finally turn steamy in the seventh and final volume, but it's a great ride to get there. Tokyopop has released all seven volumes.

Finder Series

Akihito Takaba is an amateur photographer assigned to take pictures of suspected underworld boss Ryuichi Asami, and when he's caught, gets a lot more than he bargained for. Asami develops an obsession for Akihito and kidnaps him to have his way with him. Twisted as it is, the relationship develops from there over three volumes, filled with crime-world intrigue and lots and lots of up-close kinky sex. No one gets freaky like Yamane Ayano, and Asami is definitely one of the hottest semes in yaoi existence. Be Beautiful is releasing all of the volumes as they become available in this ongoing series.

Kizuna

Samejima Ranmaru and Enjyoji Kei are a happy gay couple, but this fantastic manga by Kazuma Kodaka wouldn't have spanned over 9 volumes and still be running in Japan if there weren't a little conflict. Whether it's Enjyoji's Yakuza family interfering or his younger brother Kai trying to steal Ranmaru away, there's always something to throw a wrench in Enjyoji and Ranmaru's relationship. Comedy, drama, romance and sex -- it's all here, all beautifully wrought, volume after volume. Be Beautiful releases this as their flagship title.

So begins the wonderful sexual tension between these two gorgeous characters that smoulders and steams for four volumes through a twisting, turning plot.
